This helps me decide if you need further testing or the intervention of another healthcare professional. It would be unethical and against our governing body regulations to treat you if it is not safe and not appropriate.
If I feel that they need to refer you for help from someone else, I will discuss why and get your written permission to write to that person with important information from your examination. I will also, if appropriate, make requests for further evaluation appropriate for your condition. This will help you get faster, more effective care, because the next person you see will be aware of what is going on and you can get the most out of their expertise. It is important that you follow their instructions.
Even if you are referred for one problem, you can sometimes still be treated and you certainly can get care for any other aches or pains if it’s safe to do so.
